Medike Nature Reserve

Are you looking for the perfect mountain wilderness escape that is home to elusive species such as the Soutpansberg Flat Lizard, Leopard, and Brown Hyaena? The Soutpansberg Mountains in the Limpopo Province are South Africa’s northernmost mountain range. They are full of magic and mystery and alive with thousands of species of insects, plants, reptiles, birds, and amphibians, many of which are endemic (found nowhere else on earth).

Old salt trail

The VhaVenda call it “Tha vhani ya muno” – the Mountain of salt. Rising like an island from the surrounding bushveld flatlands, the forgotten Soutpansberg is South Africa’s best-kept secret and one of the country’s most unique and unexplored natural areas, stretching across the northern reaches of the Limpopo Province of South Africa.

The Old Salt Trail is a spectacular network of over 100 km of hiking trails across the western Soutpansberg Mountains. If you love hiking, incomparable views, rare and endemic wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, but you still enjoy your comfort, the Slackpacker’s Deluxe loop of the Old Salt Trail is for you!

Dryland Adventures

The arid Karoo landscape is the largest ecosystem in South Africa, covering 400,000 km² of vast open spaces in the Western and Northern Cape. The EWT’s Drylands Conservation Programme works with local communities to conserve the Karoo’s exceptional biodiversity and habitats. The EWT works with local communities and landowners to create and operate unique ecotourism activities, such as hiking, mountain biking and climbing, to bring visitors and much-needed income to the Karoo. Here are some of the offerings you won’t want to miss.

KZN Frog Route

The EWT’s Threatened Amphibian Programme has developed a KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Frogging Route to showcase some of the coastline’s most important wetland systems and their unique froggy residents. Whether you want to experience a fascinating evening of frogging with the pros, help our field officers collect frog data, or bring school groups for scientific studies and hands-on lessons, we have a route for you!
